- Mail Failures.
- To combat SPAM and types of mail abuse, an increasing number of mail servers, when receiving mail from you, will validate your mail server in DNS. If the DNS validation fails, your mail will be rejected. Because the mail delivery is actually a DNS problem and not a mail server problem, the mail administrator often does not know how to fix the problem and the DNS administrator is not aware of the mail problem.
- DNS configuration errors can result in mysterious, intermittant failures when receiving mail. If mail servers trying to send mail to your mail server do not obtain correct DNS information for your mail server, they will have difficulites, even failures, in sending you mail.
- Another type of DNS misconfiguration that interferes with mail delivery is in the "reverse zone". Many DNS administrators (and ISP's) do not know what the reverse zone is or how to obtain or delegate authority for a reverse zone. If your mail server's reverse zone is not correct, many mail servers will refuse your mail.
- Because a public DNS plays a critical role Internet, it has long been a preferred target of crackers attempting to halt or destroy DNS, resulting in disruptions for 100's or 1000's of users. There are various techniques available, and new techniques arriving, to secure your DNS against break-ins. Is your DNS secured against attacks?
