Internet mail is now a well-known vector destructive viruses and worms. MEI VirusGate for Internet mail is a service for blocking the propagation of infected mail from incoming and outgoing mail. The MEI VirusGate is an on-line service that is available to any mail server anywhere.

VirusGate is an MEI service for blocking mail infected with viruses and worms. Since VirusGate scans the mail as the mail passes through MEI, there is the maximum protection for the client's mail server and the users' personal mailboxes.

The above diagram displays the major operation of VirusGate for an infected message from arriving from Internet.

  • An infected PC sends an infected message via his local mail server to Internet and to the VirusGate client.

  • The VirusGate client has routed his Internet mail through the VirusGate service. The incoming message is scanned by VirusGate and the virus is detected. The infected message is blocked at VirusGate, preventing the infected message from entering the VirusGate's mail server and mailboxes.

  • VirusGate sends a Virus Alert message to the infected sender and to the VirusGate recipient announcing to each party that a virus was detected in a message from whom and to whom.

  • VirusGate is completely transparent to the client's mail server and users.

  • Because the VirusGate client's mail server is no longer present in DNS MX records (the MX record for client's domain points to VirusGate), the client's mail server is protected from attacks based on the mail addresses of the users.

  • VirusGate can also scan a client's outgoing mail. This prevents the embarrassing situation where an organization's employees send out infected mail to partners, clients, suppliers, etc.

  • As part of the VirusGate service, the MEI SpamGate service is included. So not only does the VirusGate client gain protection against viruses, there is also the reduction in spam and protection against malicious attacks such as mail bombs and mail address harvesting.

  • As part of the VirusGate service, each client receives a monthly report showing the details of the message traffic through VirusGate.

Pricing for VirusGate is based on the total volume in megabytes of messages scanned by VirusGate, independent of the number of messages scanned, the number of mailboxes protected, or the number of domains per client. Mail volume is counted in units of 200 megabytes, rounded up. A single VirusGate client can subscribe any number of domains to the VirusGate service, with the mail volume for all domains aggregated under one VirusGate.

In the case where an infected message comes from Internet:

(1) The infected message leaves the sender and is routed to the VirusGate service at MEI.

(2) VirusGate detects the infection and blocks the delivery. (Note that the message first passes through SpamGate where it may be blocked.)

(3) VirusGate sends a Virus Alert message to infected sender and to the recipient(s) at the VirusGate client.

In the case where an infected message is sent from a VirusGate client:

(1) The infected message is sent to the client's mail server.

(2) The client's mail server relays all its outbound mail through VirusGate.

(3) VirusGate detects the infection and blocks the delivery.

(4) VirusGate sends a Virus Alert message to infected sender at the VirusGate client and to the recipient(s).
